January, 2008, Parsons received the highest award given by the Extension Service--he received the 2007 Superior Service Award for a Distinguished 33-Year Career Achievement of ground-breaking achievements in developing and marketing new plants and in using the mass media and the Internet to popularize gardening among millions of people."
Parsons officially retired in August, 2007, but was hired as a part-time employee to continue his very successful Extension educational programs and he served in that capacity until November, 2008.
